Yeast infection & Candida research and evidence
Follow evidence maps and plain-language study summaries on yeast infection, recurrent thrush, and Candida claims, updated as evidence changes.
Start with an evidence synthesis or a meaningful change, then inspect individual research summaries and original sources.
Evidence maps
See what the body of evidence supports, disputes, and still leaves uncertain.
- Recurrent vaginal yeast symptoms
Inspect the maintained evidence map for recurrent vaginal symptoms.
- Oral fluconazole and pregnancy outcomes
See outcome-specific evidence on congenital malformations, miscarriage, stillbirth, and neonatal death.
- Possible imidazole adverse-event signals
A spontaneous-report analysis raises hypotheses but cannot establish event rates, causality, or treatment risk.
- Acute vaginal yeast infection treatment
See current treatment claims and the contextual S005 study within their exact population and limits.
- Broad Candida claims
Inspect the maintained evidence map for broad Candida explanations.

Study summaries
Read plain-language summaries of the individual studies behind the evidence maps.
- Oral and topical treatments for uncomplicated vaginal yeast infection
Network analysis of first-line options.
- Oral fluconazole and congenital malformations in pregnancy
A large cohort estimates malformation outcomes after first-trimester exposure; findings sit alongside broader pregnancy-outcome evidence.
- Topical azoles for vaginal yeast infection in pregnancy
One small Thai trial compares two single-dose vaginal treatments; wide confidence intervals do not establish equivalence or rare pregnancy safety.
- Ibrexafungerp for vaginal yeast infection
A Chinese placebo-controlled trial reports symptom and culture outcomes after one-day oral treatment; it did not compare the drug with azoles.
- Imidazole antifungals and adverse-event reports
FAERS signals lack exposure denominators and cannot establish causality or risks of vaginal treatment.
- Natamycin plus lactulose for acute vaginal yeast infection
One sponsor-funded short-term trial reports a product-specific result with unresolved count/percentage discrepancies; it did not compare with recommended azoles.
- Treatment concerns in recurrent vaginal yeast infection
Interviews with 24 women with prior treatment failure and two gynecologists describe possible concerns, but do not estimate adherence or compare treatment routes.
- Managing vaginal yeast infection: 2026 review
A broad narrative review adds diagnostic and treatment context but reports no pooled treatment estimates or direct maintenance-route comparison.
- Non-albicans Candida in sub-Saharan Africa
A regional review reports prevalence estimates among women ages 15–49, with high heterogeneity and unresolved table-count discrepancies; it does not support a treatment change.
- Fluconazole-resistant vaginal yeast infection: 2024 review
A narrative review maps selected resistant-VVC reports with varied methods and outcomes; it provides no pooled comparison or treatment recommendation.
- Vulvar cutaneous candidiasis and recurrent vaginal yeast infection
Eight selected guidelines split between three and four episodes/year; the authors' proposed phenotype distinction is unvalidated and has no new clinical outcomes.
- Recurrent vaginal yeast infection: possible mechanisms
A systematic review of 12 studies describes possible mechanisms but includes no meta-analysis, treatment result, or validated individual recurrence prediction.
- Aptima molecular assays for vaginitis
A single-laboratory evaluation compared Aptima with Gram stain and culture; detection alone does not establish that yeast caused symptoms.
- Self-diagnosis of vaginal yeast infection
One 2010 military-clinic kit study reported low sensitivity; it does not measure symptom-only self-attribution or current commercial tests.
- GYNI microscopy and pH test
A single-clinic accuracy study reports device-specific results but no patient outcomes; it does not change diagnostic guidance or practical action.
- Maintenance treatment for recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis
Review of options for recurrence.
- Oral versus topical maintenance treatment for RVVC
Head-to-head maintenance comparison.
- How recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis affects quality of life
Patient-reported burden of recurrence.
- How patients and clinicians experience recurrent-thrush diagnosis
Diagnostic experience study.
- Lived experience of recurrent vaginal yeast infection
Australian interviews with 10 trial-screened women add patient-reported context; themes and recalled delays are not population estimates or treatment effects.
- Vaginal yeast infection and recurrence: microbiome study
One clinic compared bacteria and metabolites in 31 RVVC, 28 VVC, and 29 selected healthy controls; associations do not establish cause or treatment targets.
- Probiotics alongside antifungals for vulvovaginal candidiasis
Cochrane review of probiotic add-ons.
- Comparing seven consumer gut microbiome testing services
What consumer microbiome tests actually report.
- Candida, diet, and the gut mycobiome: a 2023 study
A 72-day feeding series analyzed fecal fungi in 28 completers; it did not test Candida disease or treatment, and its participant prevalence figures conflict.
- Candida, diet, and gut fungi: a 2013 study
In 96 analyzed stool samples, recent carbohydrate intake correlated positively and saturated fat negatively with relative Candida abundance; usual-diet correlations were not significant. No effect size or clinical outcome was reported.
- Blood-type diet and ABO genotype: a 2014 study
In 1,455 young adults, relative diet-pattern scores were associated with some cardiometabolic biomarkers, but matching to genotype added no benefit; no Candida or infection outcome was measured.
- Fermented foods for BV and vaginal yeast infection
Nine human studies through 2024 tested yogurt or yogurt drinks; results varied, and some trials had attrition or reporting gaps. No Polish staples were studied.
- Nystatin for presumed Candida-related systemic symptoms
Trial of nystatin for systemic symptom claims.
- Small-intestinal fungal overgrowth in a specialist referral cohort
SIFO findings in referred patients.
